In the July ordinary assembly meeting, ETO President Metin Güler emphasized the importance of considering the sustainability of creditor companies when making concordat decisions for firms. He noted that in 2024, public banks in Eskişehir have slowed down cash loan distribution, while private banks have provided more loans.
The meeting took place in the Mustafa Çekiç Meclis Salonu, beginning with an opening speech by Deputy Chair İbrahim Atilla Sabahcı. Güler discussed recent visits to the districts, stating that the development of trade and industry in these areas directly contributes to the city and helps prevent migration. He reiterated the commitment to supporting rural development and thanked Elif Gürkaynak and the members of the TOBB Eskişehir Women Entrepreneurs Board for their efforts to increase the number of women entrepreneurs in the districts.
Private Banks Outperform Public Banks in Cash Loan Distribution
According to data from the Turkish Banking Association, Güler reported that in May 2023, cash loans distributed by public banks in Eskişehir amounted to 34.7 billion TL, while this increased to 39.9 billion TL by May 2024. In contrast, the cash loan distribution by private banks reached 53.9 billion TL in the same period. He highlighted that while public banks have slowed down their loan distribution, private banks are meeting the financing needs.
Caution Required in Concordat Decisions
Güler raised concerns about the risks that some concordat decisions pose to the economy, particularly noting that certain companies in cities like Istanbul and Bursa have had these decisions easily granted. He pointed out that companies working with those under concordat may face difficulties in collecting their receivables. Güler stressed the need to carefully assess the sustainability of creditor companies when making such decisions.
Importance of Monitoring the Economic Indicators Report
Güler also provided information about the Eskişehir Economic Indicators Report prepared monthly by ETO, which includes data from official institutions such as TURKSTAT, the banking association, and the chamber's registry records. He encouraged members to closely monitor this report, which shares vital data on inflation, the number of businesses opening and closing, permits issued, cash loan distributions, and bounced checks.
At the end of the meeting, ETO President Metin Güler and Deputy Chair İbrahim Atilla Sabahcı presented a plaque of appreciation to former ETO council member İrfan Gümüş for his contributions to the Eskişehir Chamber of Commerce and the local economy.
