In the May meeting of the Eskişehir Chamber of Commerce (ETO), President Metin Güler highlighted that salary and minimum wage increases alone will not solve the economic issues, stressing the importance of enhancing the purchasing power of employees instead.
The ordinary meeting took place with the opening remarks of Assembly Chairman Halil İbrahim Ara in the Mustafa Çekiç Meeting Hall. During the meeting, Güler provided information about the events held in May at the Eskişehir Fuar Kongre Merkezi, noting that the Eskişehir Book Fair attracted 150,000 visitors. He also mentioned cultural and artistic events at the Vehbi Koç Congress Center, including the 23rd National Andrology Congress and the 4th National Nursing Management Congress, emphasizing ongoing efforts to develop congress tourism in Eskişehir.
Economic Stability Relies on Employee Well-being
Regarding the ongoing discussions about minimum wage increases, Güler remarked that employers also desire the well-being of their employees. However, he emphasized that it is crucial to focus on increasing purchasing power rather than just salary hikes. He pointed out that if employees are unhappy and struggling financially, it would hinder production and weaken the economy. Güler suggested that reducing the tax burden on workers could contribute to enhancing their purchasing power. He warned that wage increases often lead to price hikes and inflation, quickly diminishing their value, and stressed the need for additional measures to improve employee welfare.
Focus on Housing and Cost-effective Development
Güler also addressed the persistent high rental costs, highlighting the importance of producing social housing for employees, which requires developing affordable land and opening new zoning areas. Additionally, he welcomed the government's Cost-Saving and Efficiency Package, stating that if implemented fully, it could reduce budget deficits and accelerate economic recovery.
