In a recent informational meeting held at ETO, Professor Dr. Özgür Avşar from Eskişehir Technical University explained the critical aspects of skilled labor necessary for constructing earthquake-resistant buildings, utilizing videos and photographs to illustrate his points.
The Eskişehir Chamber of Commerce (ETO) continues to open new horizons for its members through educational initiatives. The Construction Contracting Professional Committee of ETO organized a meeting titled "The Importance of Skilled Labor in Structural Resilience." The event took place in the Mustafa Çekiç Assembly Hall and was attended by ETO President Metin Güler, Assembly President Halil İbrahim Ara, board members, and assembly members.
Working to Elevate the Construction Sector
At the opening of the meeting, ETO Assembly Member Atakan Bakılan remarked on the significant earthquake disaster that struck Turkey, extending condolences to those who lost their lives and their families. He emphasized the need to learn from such tragedies and noted that the ETO Construction Contracting Professional Committee is dedicated to improving the sector. Bakılan explained that the event was organized to enhance the quality of the structural systems in Eskişehir, which is under earthquake risk, and expressed confidence that the seminar would be informative for the construction industry.
Skilled Labor is Crucial for Building Resilience
Professor Dr. Özgür Avşar highlighted the unprecedented scale of the recent earthquakes in Turkey, stating that the disasters led to the loss of over 50,000 lives and resulted in a financial loss of approximately 103 billion dollars according to the Turkish Ministry of Treasury and Finance. He stressed that building inspections are among the foremost measures needed to prevent casualties in future earthquakes, advocating for meticulous oversight throughout the entire process, from land allocation to the completion of buildings.
Attention to Structural Elements is Essential
Emphasizing the significance of skilled labor in constructing robust buildings, Avşar stated that all vertical and horizontal structural reinforcements must be executed with care. He illustrated instances of faulty constructions in earthquake zones through videos and photographs, providing detailed information on how load-bearing systems, such as columns and shear walls, should be produced. Avşar concluded that buildings constructed in accordance with regulations have managed to withstand the recent earthquakes.
