Eskişehir Chamber of Commerce President Metin Güler emphasized that exorbitant rent increases are being demanded for workplaces, noting that small businesses cannot withstand these hikes. He called for the rent cap implemented on residential leases to be extended to workplace leases as well.
In his written statement, ETO President Metin Güler addressed the government’s recent decision to cap residential rent increases at 25% and suggested that the same measures should apply to commercial properties. Güler reminded that due to the unusual increases in residential rents, the government has taken a series of measures, and he stated that similar steps should also be taken for workplaces. He pointed out that the Turkish economy is going through a sensitive period, with traders, industrialists, and small business owners facing significant challenges. Güler emphasized that excessive rent hikes are putting businesses in a difficult position, as rent is one of the largest expenses for workplaces. With rising rental costs, it has become increasingly difficult for small and medium-sized enterprises to survive.
Commercial Rents Indirectly Impact Inflation
Güler argued that even a temporary rent cap on workplaces, similar to that applied to residences, would help reduce prices on store shelves and indirectly lower inflation. He stressed that traders are making efforts to recover from the pandemic, maintain employment, and support sustainable growth. He highlighted that implementing a rent cap on workplaces is crucial for the survival of traders. Güler expressed optimism that extending the rent cap, which will take effect for residences on July 1, 2022, to workplaces would positively impact both businesses and the economy. He conveyed the expectation that the measures taken for residential leases should be broadened to cover commercial properties as well.
