Evaluating the new controlled normalization process in Eskişehir, ETO President Metin Güler expressed satisfaction with the reopening of the service sector, particularly restaurants, cafes, and dining establishments. To help sustain businesses and preserve employment, he suggested that salaries could be covered by employers, while tax and social security obligations could be shouldered by the state.
Güler noted that Eskişehir’s service sector businesses have been struggling under temporary closures or restrictions for nearly a year, and he welcomed the news that, as of March 2, 2021, establishments like restaurants and cafes could operate at half capacity.
Everyone has a role to play in preventing a resurgence of the virus
Güler emphasized that all citizens must follow COVID-19 guidelines to sustain the progress, keep the economy stable, and heal the wounds in the local economy.
The food and beverage sector seeks labor support from the government
Underscoring the importance of preserving the workforce in the sector, Güler noted that businesses that retained employees during the pandemic should receive support in social security, withholding, and tax obligations until the end of the year. He stressed that government contributions are essential to prevent job losses and suggested that the state could cover social security and tax obligations, while employers continue paying wages.
A win-win formula for both employers and the state
Güler highlighted that this formula would benefit employees, companies, and the state alike. He pointed out that providing social security support would reduce the potential burden on the unemployment fund, as it would prevent layoffs. Güler added that such a measure would promote employment continuity and reduce the state’s burden related to workforce support.
