In the December assembly meeting, Eskişehir Chamber of Commerce President Metin Güler shared insights into Eskişehir’s economic performance in 2020, noting that the year was filled with challenges. He expressed hope that trade would recover by the second quarter of 2021 as the effects of the pandemic subside.
During the video conference, held due to COVID-19 precautions, Güler emphasized that 2020 was a difficult year not only for the global economy but also for Eskişehir and its Chamber members. He stated that approximately 3,000 ETO member businesses were either closed or restricted due to the pandemic, and the total number of indirectly affected members approached 8,000.
Those who focused on e-commerce were less impacted by the pandemic
Güler highlighted that Eskişehir’s service sector, which forms the core of the local economy, was severely affected by the pandemic. He warned that the service sector faces the risk of losing its skilled workforce. However, he noted that firms utilizing e-commerce or delivery services were less impacted by the pandemic, underlining the increasing importance of e-commerce both globally and locally.
77 million lira in support provided to members
Güler mentioned that ETO mobilized all its resources to support its members during the pandemic. Through its Nefes Credit program and government-backed loans, the Chamber provided more than 77 million lira in financial aid to its members. In addition to financial assistance, Güler reminded members that ETO facilitated affordable PCR testing through its test centers, offering much better rates than the market.
Hopes for exports postponed to the new year
Discussing Eskişehir’s export performance, Güler noted a 20% decline in exports for firms based in Eskişehir compared to 2019. However, he expressed confidence that Eskişehir’s production strength and capabilities would help recover this loss. Güler added that with the widespread use of the vaccine and the normalization of daily life, exports are expected to rise by the second quarter of 2021.
2021 will be a year of economic recovery
Looking ahead to 2021, Güler expressed hope that it would be a year for ETO members to recover from the damage caused by the pandemic. He anticipated a revival in trade as life returns to normal and restrictions are eased. Güler also emphasized the need for continued support for traders and small business owners throughout 2021.
